a collection of soundtracks, each one inspired by the wanderings of photographer Cody Ellingham on his journey through various cities in Asia.

DERIVE Hong Kong
DERIVE Hong Kong made its debut on episode one of DERIVE Soundscapes Radio.
The Derive series takes a look at what sounds are evoked from cities in Asia. It asks the question “what does it mean for a city to have a sound?”. Post DERIVE was created as a response to not having one particular city in mind but the amalgamation of everything I’ve done with the Derive series thus-far.
The old meshes with the new here much like the city of Taipei. The monotonous pulse throughout is reminiscent of distant sirens.
Inspired greatly by Gisaburō Sugii’s movie Night on the Galactic Railroad and an all-night jam session. We wandered and created together.
The first piece made using one of Cody’s images as inspiration. The glowing neon light obscured but in plain view amongst the skyscrapers evokes my methods of making music; first creating a thick wall-of-sound, cloud-like texture but then having this melodic movement hidden deep within, waiting to be discovered.
